In this episode, we’re talking about something that’s really hot right now. And that’s online courses. You know, we’re here sometime in the middle of May. It’s unbelievable to me that we’re in May 17, as it is today.
In 2020, it feels like it feels like the new year just started. We’ve had, you know, multiple celebrities and people you know, who are icons who passed away this year we’ve had the Coronavirus, we’ve had the Australian wildfires, we’ve had so many things that have happened to the world in in 2020. And, you know, this is really, it’s really got people focus, and I can see it in the feeds, whether it’s Twitter, or LinkedIn or Facebook, you know, so many people are looking at what am I What am I really good at? And is there a way for me to make money teaching the things that I love and the things that I’m good at. And that’s where, you know, we talked about it in the intro courses are hot.
And because of people being stuck at home, you know, being furloughed, having to work from home, I think a lot of people are the ones who actually just don’t have a job anymore. That’s the other tough, like, that’s a huge thing, right? I mean, there’s a lot of people unemployed, and you know, they need to make money, everybody needs to make money, it’s the beauty of the of the era that we live in, is that you can take a passion, take something that you just are crazy about. And you can teach people about it, you can have a podcast about video games, you can have a podcast about the Nintendo, you know, you can have a podcast about wrestling action figures, you can build a course, you know teaching people how to build pretty much anything, you know, woodworking, building computers at home, you name it, I mean, how to work fundamentals, and basketball, tons and tons of things, anything you can think of there’s you can teach somebody this.
And that’s where we really wanted to cover in this podcast is is how to build a website, to where you can host those courses. And WordPress is a great platform for it. There’s tons of other ones out there, you know, there’s teachable kajabi there’s there’s all kinds of things, there’s Udemy. And there’s a lot of different, you know, platforms that are built specifically for courses, you know, but you have to pay the monthly, you have to be at the mercy of that platform as well. Whereas if you build it in WordPress, it’s yours. It is to a degree scalable. And really, it is truly scalable, because you can move it from host to host if you needed more bandwidth, you can move it to a different hosting platform. And you can continue to grow and build up more courses and offer pretty much unlimited number of courses around different topics that you love. And that’s where the beauty of WordPress comes in. And you know, there’s a few different platforms and LMS is learning management systems that can be added into WordPress.
The one I want to talk about today, and the one that I really respect and admire is lifter LMS. And that’s because of mainly because of the person who’s driving the ship. Chris Badgett is, is a really nice guy. He’s a really good guy, and he’s somebody who cares a lot about the community. We’ve spent a lot of time especially now during this this Coronavirus shutdown, he has spent a ton of time doing online webinars, you know, really engaging with the community, really educating his community on things that they can do on ways to set up their hosts on, you know, opportunities that they have within the platform, the ways that you can take his platform and build out different style courses, there’s just, there’s so much out there, right so lifter LMS is is just one of those platforms that I absolutely love.
And you know, I really, I want to talk a little bit about some of the additional add ons because you can get the plugin for free, which is in itself, extremely cool. But then you can install it. And there’s a ton of different things that they call add ons, you know, so they do work on the premium or the freemium model, and they do bundles. You can add in groups, you can do advanced quizzes, you can set assignments, advanced videos, where you can create professional video experiences in your course with a what they consider a sophisticated suite of video enhancements to help your learner stay engaged and get the most out of video.
There’s also social learning. You know where it says allow your students to learn together and have a social media style conversation and in the ghost town isolation that most courses Have you know there’s lifter LMS private area, there’s PDFs, there’s custom fields there’s payment integrations with stripe and PayPal, you can connect with WooCommerce easy digital downloads and pretty much all of the email marketing platforms and form fields you know, Ninja forms, Gravity Forms WP forms, there’s just a ton of additional add ons that you can that you can purchase for lifter LMS.
And the beauty of the core being free is that you can get it you can build out your your course you can get the feel for the platform, and from there, as you have additional needs, you can buy plugins or you can buy a bundle and then you can continue to to scale your platform. But for the most part, most people are just going to need a way for someone to sign up and a way to collect money that’s basic and that will cost you very, very very little with lifter LMS and WordPress you can find a nice host pay 30 bucks a month you know let’s say your membership is $30 a month if you sign up two people you’re profiting 50%.
And nothing wrong with that right you know, if you can buy add on the lifter LMS add ons may cost you another couple 100 bucks a year, you know, sign up another handful of clients or students and you know it didn’t it’s really only as limited as your creativity but you can do all of this stuff for less than a few grand, probably less than $1,000 a year with hosting with the add ons, with lifter LMS all that stuff you can get started at much cheaper than that. So, you know, I would highly recommend this if you have a passion project and you really, you really really love to teach or you need to make extra money and you want to figure out your voice and figure out how to be a teacher. And honestly, as a teacher have something that you’re really truly passionate about.
It’s gonna be like hanging out with your friends, go and find your, your, your community, go find the people that you’re already hanging out with. And then bring them in, bring them into your community and have them learn, have them help you teach maybe different courses. There’s so many options, right? But lifter LMS WordPress, a great host like WP Engine, Amazon Web server, flywheel anything like those, and you can do some really, really good stuff. And you can scale a business that won’t be impacted by a global pandemic economic shutdown, people, as long as most people continue to work, they’re still going to have money to spend, they’re still going to want to educate themselves, they’re going to want to grow. And the internet gives you access when the world has completely built walls around each of us and won’t let us connect or touch or be in the same room.
So I just wanted to I wanted to put this out there the Coronavirus shut down has been on my mind. Making money in the midst of a global pandemic has been on my mind, trying to find the passion project, the thing that you just love and want to talk about and could talk about for weeks, with no interruption has been on my mind.
